Week 9

Craft: For this assignment we started to make a magazine using the program Adobe InDesign. We were assigned to make our first layout for the magazine using only the photos from our second project, which was about creating our own style. In order to complete this assignment we had to learn how to use InDesign. First, it is important to have all the content completed and ready to go before starting the project. After all the pictures and projects where in appropriate files we had to make a root file to hold every piece of information that we wanted in the magazine. So I had a root folder with two project folders and inside each project folder was every illustration for that project. Next, I open InDesign and created a new document, I choose letter size with 6 pages, portrait orientation. Then I saved the document to the desktop and then put the InDesign project into the root folder because the root folder is my total magazine. That one folder is my complete magazine.

Composition: For this article I wanted the artwork to be very present. On the first page of the layout I simply put my favorite illustration as big as I could with no text. On the next page I put the title, author name, a pull quote and 3 columns of text. I purposely placed all of these items on the bottom third of the second page because I wanted the reader to be able to take a breath and get ready for the biggest and most important article of the magazine. I also wanted this article to look simple and elegant at the same time so that the artwork and my style would really be the focal point of the entire article.

Concept: The making a personal style project, project 2, was the project that I felt should be the main focus within my magazine. This article will also be the longest in the magazine so I wanted to make sure that the overall feel of this article was one that made the reader feel like it was the most important. The reason that everything is simple and not really over the top is because the important information about this article is the artwork and the recognition of my own personal style. I wanted the reader to be able to clearly see the artwork and be able to really get involved with it. I also wanted the reader to be able to see all the artworks together so that they could see the style on one page and not have to flip around to see the artwork and try to distinguish the style.
